Who I Am

I'm Lucius — a basketball coach, educator, and lifelong student of the game. Born in Ghana, raised in Canada, shaped by the gym. I lead the Senior Boys program at University Hill and the U13 program at Empower Basketball, while studying Kinesiology at Langara. I coach as a teacher and a friend — because that's where winning teams begin.

Coach mentoring a young player

Why I Coach

I didn't choose coaching. It chose me.

Coaching was never the plan. I was a player who got asked to help out — and an athletic director who saw something in me before I saw it in myself. The first time I helped a young player figure something out, I was hooked.

Somewhere along the way it stopped being about basketball and started being about the people. That's the work I've committed my life to: using the game to help young people grow into confident, accountable adults.

"Someone believed in me before I believed in myself. Now that's my job."

How I Think

The game is a classroom.

Spacing teaches awareness. Defense teaches discipline. Adversity teaches resilience. Here's how I approach the work.

01

Teach decisions, not just drills.

Every rep should train a read — not just a motion. We coach players to think the game, not memorize it.

02

Develop the person first.

Get the human right and the player follows. Habits, character, and accountability come before any move.

03

Make the standard the boss.

Not me, not mood — a clear standard everyone answers to. That's what holds a team together when it's hard.

04

Measure habits, not highlights.

Daily, tracked, unglamorous habits beat flashes of talent. The long game is won in the quiet reps.

What I Believe

01

Culture beats talent.

Standards repeated daily outlast raw ability.

02

Connection before correction.

Players accept hard coaching from people who clearly care.

03

We build people, not just players.

The scoreboard fades. Character compounds.

04

Standards are a form of love.

Holding you to a higher bar is how I invest in you.

05

Play the long game.

I coach for who you'll be in ten years — not just this season.

"Coach Lucius builds more than players — he builds people. Our son grew in confidence, discipline, and leadership under his guidance."
